The final site visit study day will take place on Wednesday 12th September to the BIONICS embankment near Newcastle upon Tyne.

The focus of the day is to look at the work of BIONICS (Biological and Engineering Impacts of Climate Change on Slopes), one of the projects of the Building Knowledge for a Changing Climate (BKCC) programme. BIONICS enables the effects of climate change on infrastructure slopes to be deduced. This is done via a fullscale, instrumented soil bank, planted with a variety of flora, with controlled heating and rainfall at its surface. We will visit this unique facility for engineering and biological research.

Visitors will learn about the most up to date research on understanding the effects of climate change on slopes. BIONICS will allow the skills to be developed to enable future research to devise engineering solutions to the effects of climate change. Spinoff projects from BIONICS have already been funded, including Remote asset inspection for transport corridor environments, which uses the BIONICS embankment.
